Our Children Ask, “What will you leave behind for us?”
On Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at 3:30 pm, in Boulder, up to a thousand youth and adults will gather on the Pearl Street mall in front of the court house (between 13th and 14th street) to raise their voices of concern about the environmental and global issues facing us today.
The rally will feature such notable speakers as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., author of Crimes Against Nature; 16-year-old Isa Roske of Youth Leaders in Action, who co-organized the event with her mother Tamara Roske; Actress and Activist Mary McDonell; Native American Music Artist Robbie Romero; Boulder mayor and candidate for County Commissioner Will Toor; and former president of Boulder Valley School Board Bill De La Cruz, as well as other surprise guest celebrities, Aztec ceremonial dancers, Native American Drum Group and live music.
Afterward, the group will march to Boulder High School (1604 Arapahoe) where they will form themselves into a giant human mosaic of the Torch, and a message to the world, which will be photographed from a helicopter by photographer John Quigley of Spectral Q (www.SpectralQ.com), world famous for such creations (A limited number of local photographers may be permitted to participate in this aerial shot).
“We are too young to vote, but not too young to be concerned about the direction we are moving regarding the state of our earth,” said Isa Roske. “This is a call for help. We need the adults of our communities and our nation to vote on our behalf.”
As a symbol of youth’s desire to inherit a better world, the International Children’s Torch of Hope, which has been carried by youth to high-profile events throughout the world and been blessed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, will be lit and held aloft at the rally.
The rally will also feature signs carried by 300 students naming crimes committed against the environment under the current administration. The event is sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center (www.RMPJC.org), with other support coming from various groups and individuals with environmental concerns.
